At the age of 22, Canadian record holder in the 400m, 800m and 1500m Freestyle, Victoria's Ryan Cochrane is one of Canada's leading forces in the distance events and has shown no signs of letting up since winning the Olympic bronze medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Canada’s only medal from the Water Cube.
At the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, Ryan won Canada's first gold medal in the 400 m freestyle during the first day of competition. Cochrane also became the first Canadian man in 72 years to win gold in the 400 m freestyle at the Commonwealth Games. He also won a second gold medal in 1500 m freestyle.
Out of the pool, Ryan has become an ambassador for ActNowBC – a provincial initiative aimed at promoting Olympic values and the importance of being active for elementary school students.
