Whether we’re jet-setting for spring break or taking it easy on staycation at home, we tend to forget our body needs to stay on track even when we’re on break.

Your lifestyle might always be go-go-go, but your body might secretly be saying no-no-no. Chasing around the little ones, planning a trip, and catching up on paperwork can definitely take its toll and you might find yourself neglecting your physical and mental well-being. Self-care is something we easily put on the backburner; however, we often get a cruel wake-up call once we’re sick with a cold. Self-care is a vital part of our emotional, physical, and mental health. It may be hard to slow down, but we’ve got five different ways to keep your body on track even when your routine is taking a break.

1. Breathe.

We often undervalue the importance of breathing. Breathing supplies our bodies with oxygen while ridding itself of toxins. Taking just a few deep breaths can quickly relieve stress and tension in your body (thanks to that extra kick of oxygen). Breathing Exercise 101: 1) take a long deep inhalation, 2) hold for a few seconds, 3) let out a long slow exhale.

2. A 10-minute walk.

Whether you’re at home or on vacation, exercise can serve as an amazing stress reliever while also releasing endorphins (the happy hormones) into your body. Research shows that a quick walk can help you destress your body and clear your head. It can do a variety of things for your body from increasing energy levels to improving brain function.

3. Fruit for thought:

Vitamin C is essential to maintain/support immune function. Your body doesn’t store or produce Vitamin C so it’s important to have fruits and vegetables that contain Vitamin C often. Whether you’re squeezing a lemon wedge onto your salad or snacking on a tangerine, citrus is a great way to get your daily dose of Vitamin C. Stock a couple oranges from the hotel bar, local grocery store or load up at breakfast.

4. Sleep. Sleep. Sleep.

A lack of sleep impacts us in so many ways. Sleepiness causes accidents, mistakes and errors because it impairs our attention, alertness, and problem solving. Sleep loss may also trigger weight gain while impacting our mood causing us to feel more irritable and impatient. Looks like we’ll be headed to bed early tonight! Stick with a structured sleep schedule even when on vacation or staycation.
