Water: Shaken, stirred or spiced up

With Canadian summers setting new temperature records over the last few years, it’s never been more important to make sure you’re staying hydrated throughout the entire day.

Even though we all know the importance of water, it can be difficult to make time in your schedule for regular water breaks. One study even reported almost 10 per cent of people don’t drink water at all.

To make hitting your daily water target less of a chore and more of habit, try mixing it up a bit.

Add fruit

A tried and true classic, there’s just something more enticing about flavoured water. Adding lemon, lime or cucumbers is a go-to for most people, but don’t be afraid to step outside the box a bit. Combing two commonly paired fruits like raspberries and blueberries is an easy step into the more elaborate side of water infusion, and before long you’ll be offering guests a festive five-fruit concoction.

Make tea

Tea is a great alternative to plain water as it adds flavour and colour without any additional calories, provided you don’t load up on sugar. The flavour range is nearly endless, with black tea, green tea, white tea and rooibos blends all offering an expansive selection. To help beat the summer heat, try making a large batch early in the morning and keeping it in the fridge for homemade iced-tea on demand.

Add spice

People tend to associate spices with warmth, but don’t let that hold you back. Mint leaves are cool and a refreshing way to add a bit of a kick to your cup, while a cinnamon stick can be used to kick up the overall health impact of your drink. In addition to giving an incentive to stay hydrated, cinnamon has been proven to help lower blood sugar and cholesterol.

App tracking

The most difficult part of monitoring your water intake? The actual monitoring part! Thankfully, there’s now a slew of apps available to help you track your intake, with some offering reminders to take periodic water breaks, so you don’t dehydrate. Here are some of the apps on the market – including one that is purchased alongside a specialized water bottle that automatically updates the tracker for you!
